Summary
Kimilsungia is a tropical orchid strain named after North Korea’s first leader Kim Il Sung. Kimjongilia is a begonia strain named after Kim Il Sung’s son and second leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il. Around the times of their birthdays it is possible to visit an exhibition hall on the banks of the Taedong River to see elaborate Kimilsungia and Kimjongilia floral displays.

The Kimilsungia exhibition can be seen around Kim Il Sung’s birthday, also known as the “Festival of the Sun” (태양절; 太陽節), on the 15th of April. The Kimjongilia exhibition can be seen around Kim Jong Il’s birthday, the “Festival of the Shining Star” (광명성절; 光明星節), on February the 16th.
