City
With a population of over 3 million, Pyongyang is North Korea’s capital and largest city. Situated on the banks of the Taedong River, it has been populated for thousands of years, and has been a capital and secondary capital of several of Korea’s ancient dynasties such as the Koguryo. After being destroyed by bombing in the Korean War, it was rebuilt according to a Soviet-inspired master plan in the 1950s and 60s. Construction projects in the decades after have led to the creation of an impressive city complete with monuments, wide boulevards, imposing apartment blocks and plenty of green space. Pyongyang is the start and end point of most tours of North Korea, and contains the most restaurants, hotels and attractions.
